Keyshorts

2022 — more like 2021, but thanks to manufacturing and shipping delays — was the year I upgraded my main machine. What’s more it was my first Apple computing device ever. Though I did have a hand me down Apple 128K to play around with as a child.

I ran my Surface Pro 3 into the ground in around 7 years time. A crack in the chassis. A small handful of dents. Friction and skin oils made two TypeCovers worn and shiny.

I knew that this time was going to be different in terms of caring for my main machine’s appearance. Got the plastic shell. Got palm-rest, and touchpad vinyl protectors. And I knew I had to find a solution to prevent wear on the keys.

That’s where Keyshorts came in. [ https://keyshorts.com/ ]

They took a bit of time to arrive. But they’re coming all the way from Poland, so I get it.

I opted for the transparent key stickers because I didn’t want to lost backlight functionality. Also, I didn’t think I could commit to one color scheme or design. Note: The key backlight functionality does function somewhat if you get a color or design. I think I’d read elsewhere that it reduces the strength of the light by approximately 50% with the sticker on the keys.

Patience is key when applying them! Take your time and do it over several days if you need to refocus and regain a steady hand when applying. I used a set of plastic medical tweezers from a first aid kit rather than the paper applicator tool they provide. I’d experienced a situation where some of the paper had torn off and got stuck to a sticker.

Remember to take your time and don’t end up with a wonky application you don’t realize you did until two days after! 😂

Ooph. It pains me how I missed this one.

Also, it will take about 3-7 days for the stickers to really settle on the keys and for them to stop looking cloudy or bubbled.

Keyshorts, I think you should include a couple extra stickers on the sheet for us folks who mess up 1 or 5 keys! 🙃
